WHAT IS CENTRAL OHIO ADVENTURE RACING ?
CENTRAL OHIO ADVENTURE RACING or COAR for short was born out of the idea that competition breeds better racing. Our founder has raced in numerous mid-west region adventure races and noticed that Ohio at the time only had one adventure racing business. That business is now on hiatus so he felt that the time is right to start COAR.

What does COAR have to offer? We have a new racer friendly format. COAR will start every season off with a short introductory race of 3-4 hours at a low price. The season then progressively gets longer up to 8 hours. Our races combine traditional events with special events like ropes and swimming. As COAR grows we hope to add more events beyond our initial 5 race calendar. COAR will try to meet the race publics expectations and exceed them. We have feedback forms for racers to critique us after every race. COAR has friends that have formed their own race organization such as the former CMAART group that has now formed TOPOADVENTURESPORTS.ORG and a great couple of guys who are up and running as NSFADVENTURES.COM.

This site is dedicated to the beginner and those who have the time to compete at least once a month.
WHAT IS ADVENTURE RACING ?

All adventure races are simple and run in similar ways. Racers report to the registration area to sign WAIVER OF LIABILITY and let the race director know that they made it to the race.  You will then have a race briefing before the start where you may be given PASSPORTS and MAPS that have CHECKPOINTS on them. Racers will then be informed the order of events, what rules to follow, how the race is scored, and your cutoff time to finish the race. Races will most likely involve MOUNTAIN BIKING on trails or roads, PADDLING on rivers or reservoirs and land navigation on foot known as ORIENTEERING. Some races have special events and strategy is up to the racer(s).

WHAT'S A WAIVER OF LIABILITY? A waiver has to be signed by every participating racer. This form releases COAR, the state of Ohio and our sponsors of any lawsuit against injury or damages. Also COAR has included a media waiver that allows us to post pictures on our website as well as post race video on sites like YOUTUBE.

WHAT'S A PASSPORT? A passport is a card with numbers that correspond to the pre-marked checkpoints on the map. Racers will find checkpoints on the race course and punch them on the passport. The passport is used to score the racer(s) total number of checkpoints located to determine the racer(s) ranking in the event.

WHAT'S A CHECKPIONT? A checkpoint is a location marked on a map clearly defined by a geographical feature like a hill top, or a stream mouth. This checkpoint is physically a pre-placed marker set by the race staff. The marker is a orange and white, 12X12, three sided, nylon triangle which includes a punch. Racers will upon finding the checkpoint punch there passport. The race director will determine what means of travel you will use to get to these checkpoints. You may bike, paddle and run to these points.

WHAT GEAR DO I NEED TO COMPETE ? Since you will be competing in various disciplines you will need some gear. Most people own a MOUNTAIN BIKE and that along with a HELMET is required. You will also need equipment to fix A flat on that MOUNTAIN BIKE, so a spare tube or patch kit as well as a PUMP will be Needed. You will also need a COMPASS to help you figure out which way your going. Some racers love to PADDLE and therefore they have their own canoes or kayaks. Most racers however will have to rent boats, paddles, and pfd's (personal flotation device). Racers will also need a hydration system such as a camelbak or water bottles. Check out our Gear section for tips and explanations of commonly used gear.

IS THIS A TEAM SPORT? Yes, and no. In most races you can compete alone as a solo or on a 2-4 person team. Teams can be of any gender or composition. For a specific explanation of the rules governing COAR "click" the RULES link.

We hope that in the coming year you race with us but other companies are great as well.
CENTRAL OHIO ADVENTURE RACING thinks the most important thing is to just get out and race and enjoy yourselves.
Thanks T. Agee, CEO and Race Director of CENTRAL OHIO ADVENTURE RACING.
